In the 30 years that passed since the great famine in 1984, Ethiopia has made a lot of progress, but there still are millions of people living in extreme poverty, food insecure, without access to improved water or sanitation that need both the state and the international community’s attention. Everywhere in the developing world, women are at the centre of traditional family life. Their importance is without a doubt crucial to the very concept of family, but while we look upon them with great admiration we should also see that the greatest responsibility falls upon women. They form and influence the next generation. In Africa, the Middle East, or even rural Romania, women work around the clock and it is women who should be the central target of development policies worldwide. If you help a woman, you help an entire generation."
